Aleksandra Frankowska is a Wimbledon College of Art graduate. Before she enrolled in the MA Painting course in London she had studied painting, printmaking and graphic design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Lodz, Poland. Her diploma included three large scale paintings of her studio space. Paintings viewed by the public in the same space in which they were created evoked comparisions, making the work site specific.
At present Frankowska is working at the Academy of Fine Arts in Lodz as an asistant tutor in Painting and
Drawing Studio at the Architectural Design Department. She exhibited across Poland, UK and Germany. Frankowska
is also a founding member of Gipsy Gold Projects - a group organising international shows. She did an internship
in an emerging commercial gallery in Lodz, where she manageded main artistic projects. Although fine art is
a main concern for Frankowska, she is still actively engaded in commercial graphic design - mainly websites.
Frankowska's work experience also includes using art as a tool to teach English to children aged 3-7.
Aleksandra Frankowska works from direct observation, and in her paintings she focuses on the overlooked and ordinary.
She considers observation as an integral part of creative process and perception of the familiar spaces and
objects is of particular interest to her. By balancing abstract and representational elements of the painting
she transfers a three-dimensional experience onto a flat surface.
Using subtle layering of the transparent glazes and opaque patches of colour, Frankowska is not denying the physicality of the paint and at the same time she shows the ability of the paint to imitate the reality mimetically. Her paintings, usually in 1:1 scale, are characterized by intriguing compositions and dimmed colours.
